Golf?
We are talking about golf?
Come on, man…..GOLF?
Seriously?
While I can appreciate that the media has to open up some fresh wounds to keep the vultures hungry, but what professionals do in their private time should never be a concern to us, unless it’s illegal.
How many personal performances do you think are affected by players dancing a bit too much, drinking a bit too much, catching the late screening of a movie, or getting up at 8am to take their kids to school? That ever written about?
If you haven’t won an away game in the playoffs, would you not rather practice on their floor and get a feel for it as opposed to running through a quick practice on your usual home floor, then a flight in the afternoon? Why not leave early in the morning (since the desired Saturday night flight didn’t work), get down to enemy territory and run through your sets and give your guys the rest of the day off to watch tape, relax, whatever? Makes sense to me.
To allude that the coach wanted to get down there to golf is insane. It’s bush league reporting. If you are pissed that Colangelo made it clearer that “I thought I put this to rest the other day, but let me say this: We have no intention of making a coaching change – period. It’s not an issue. He has three years left on his deal and what happened in the playoffs does not affect his status here. We lost to a very good basketball team”, then swallow your pride and carry on..find another story.

slightly off topic but I thought you would want to see that Juan in fact found a roll on the Pistons.

Didn’t he say “at this time”? I don’t remember him saying “period”. Although would that really make a difference since he’s such a big fat liar?
if you read the article I linked to in the post, he has changed his “at this time” stance to “period” as of today.

i agree man. at the end of the day, this is their job, and they are entitled to do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t affect their performance, which it didn’t.
that being said, this is the playoffs, and you have to be focused. i would have been much more concerned with bosh playing a round of golf, then smitch. 18 holes would have wiped out our wirey franchise player…

haha…good call on it tiring Bosh out.
Wonder how many players are “focused” when playing video games for hours during the season and the playoffs? Or hanging with their boys?
I know I’m a Sam fan, but even if it was someone I hated as a coach that was golfing before a playoff game, it wouldn’t bother me. I would think he is doing it to relax and, as some argue, playing golf actually exercises the mind and makes you a better thinker and decision maker (hello ex boss and 70% of any board of directors).
If it was a huge issue and you are a beat writer, why did you miss it? Why did it have to be picked up by someone at Yahoo? If rumblings were being made amongst players and from the executive level, why didn’t you feel them if you are following the team on a daily basis?
It’s a shame. My opinion of Grange’s writing this year was (pardon the pun) on the upswing. Especially with his blog writing. However, this just seems like a personal opinion given leverage behind the guise of a reporter.

it does annoy me as a fan because you expect them to be working on shit to win, but as a person…i think they are entitled.
it’s funny, i remember when carter went to graduate during the philly series, and people were up in arms. the time sucked, i admit, but i thought as a role model, he did a phenomenal thing.
for me, where personal activities overlap with playing is when guys like jay williams crash their motercycle, or carmelo drives drunk, tellfair takes a gun on a plane…otherwise, it isn’t even worth reporting on.

Scott,
And if you double-check what he said in the aftermath of ‘golf-gate’ you will also see how he made sure to include the words “no intention” this go round.
There’s a difference between saying,
“Sam Mitchell is going to be our team’s head coach for the 2008-2009 campaign”,
and what Colangelo actually said during either of the two question periods.

True, Khandor, but we all know Colangelo is a smooth talker. He has been caught lying in the past and his handlers (and yes, he does have a media trainer) have ensured he would never say anything as you said above.
I don’t blame him since, like Mitchell said, if something better presents itself BC would be an idiot not to listen.
However, BC has made it abundantly clear, IMHO, that any currently available coaches will not be brought in. So, Mr. Grange, move on to another target to support your paycheque and avoid being sent to cover cricket.
