These are our Toronto Raptors Linkage links for August 19th from 12:26 to 20:32:
- Maurizio Gherardini – The FAN 590 – Maurizio Gherardini – The Raptors VP and Assistant GM joins The Bullpen to discuss the team’s new lineup and reasoning behind recent trades.
- Bryan Colangelo – The FAN 590 – Bryan Colangelo – The head of the Raptors organisation joins the Game Plan to discuss a busy off-season which sees only Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon, and Andrea Bargnani returning to the 2009-10 edition of the club. Colangelo also touches upon the rumoured trade involving Marcus Banks to the Dallas Mavericks for Matt Carroll.
- Courtside – Marion getting his caddy Banks back? Colangelo on the FAN AI to Charlotte gaining legs? – It would be a risk taking on a longer deal and I’m not really sure where Carroll fits in Toronto with DeMar DeRozan, Marco Belinelli and likely Antoine Wright ahead of him on the depth chart, but getting an NBA player for a guy who’ll probably be in a suit in perpetuity and since the Raptors will need to fill some roster spots in 2 and 3 years, it isn’t a complete dud of a move if it happens.
While Carroll likely would see almost no time this season, in years two and three he could have a role, with Belinelli and Wright possibly gone from the picture.
Still the Raptors, who have traded away a bunch of second rounders, should probably get a future 2nd for signing off on this deal. Otherwise, it says here it isn’t worth it. - FAN590 – A Closer Look – The caller was most interested in statistical predictions for Andrea Bargnani, DeMar DeRozan, Marco Belinelli, and Hedo Turkoglu.Well, to be frank, I’m not going to project numbers and averages. That’s an impossibility. And it’s not fair to the players – or to me for that matter – to guess what kind of scoring or rebounding numbers we all should expect … without even knowing how many minutes a guy may play or what type of role he may have on the team over the course of 82 games.
However, I can talk in generalities …
- Trade Rumour: Carroll for Banks « nbaroundtable – Matt Carroll’s contract is to be avoided. It’s a terrible deal. One of the worst, if not the worst, in it’s pay bracket ($4-5 million per annum). The only way any team should even contemplate taking on his contract is if they’re getting one heck of an incentive from the seller. Say future first round draft picks, or someone who is actually a good player. Short of that possibility, the potential acquiring team needs to say “no” emphatically and hang up the phone immediately.
- Another move? « New Leisure Blog – However, this team needs rebounding and defense. Carroll doesn’t do any of those things, the only guy he can guard is Jason Kapono, and they make each other look like Hall of Famers whenever they play against each other. While his remaining contract isn’t big, there is no reason to take on more money when it’s not necessary. It’s not like Banks is such a distraction that they have to get rid of him immediately. And why does Colangelo feel the need to make this deal now? I know he wants to shore up the backup SF position, but he has plenty of time to do so. And it’s not like there is a sudden demand for Matt Carroll. Couldn’t he wait and see what’s available, maybe someone that we actually need? Matt Carroll isn’t going anywhere, there is no team trying to get him; he will remain in Dallas if we don’t do this deal. You can still make this deal closer to training camp if there is nothing better coming along.
- Another Raptor’s Trade: Banks For Carroll? | Bleacher Report – The proposed trade has the potential to help both teams.Dallas acquires a backup point guard, whose salary comes off the books sooner than Carroll’s.
The Raptors pick up another 40% 3-point shooting swingman to directly replace Kapono, but at a much more reasonable price. Banks having no real shot of seeing any playing time in Toronto, ever.
Matt’s best season was in 2006-07 when he averaged 12.1 points, 2.9 boards, and 1.3 assists in 26 minutes.
Last year he got very little burn with either Charlotte or Dallas.
- Break-Ups Are Rough, Toronto, but It’s Over with Pops Mensah-Bonsu | Bleacher Report – I enjoyed Pops’ stay in Toronto. The season was shot, and PMB brought some excitement when he came on to the court. But now it’s time to move on. Re-signing Mensah-Bonsu shouldn’t happen. We have filled the void. Reggie Evans, Rasho Nestorvic, and Amir Johnson are better players than Mensah-Bonsu.
There’s a reason San Antonio and Dallas let him go. He will not contribute to a championship-caliber team. He does not fit into the plan of any team going for it all.
- SLAM ONLINE | » Baseketball – It was minutes after the Raptors’ Game 2 playoff loss to the Knicks, and the Raps’ once-lethal scorer Curry had just finished his second straight night with minimal minutes. He didn’t seem in any mood to talk, but, emboldened by Burrell telling me that pitcher-turned-sharp-shooter Curry had been a role model of sorts, I nudged my way past Toronto’s Alvin Williams and asked Curry about his “brief” baseball career. “Yeah,” Williams cracked. “Very brief.”“Shut up,” Curry countered with a sudden smile. Curry was the ace of the Virginia Tech pitching staff in ’85 [the year he was drafted by the Orioles], and happily recalled striking out future big leaguers Paul Sorrento and Luis Alicea in a win over Florida State. “Right now I’d say that my baseball career is better than my basketball one.” Considering that Curry has scored more than 11,000 points in the NBA, it appears he made the right choice, but some guys never seem to know for sure.
- Daily Spin: The Toronto Raptors Are The Most Improved Team So Far | Bleacher Report – Jay Triano is entering his season as a full time coach, and Colangelo is thrilled about his new coach who received high praise from USA Basketball for his work in their summer program, and is known to be an admirer of the up-tempo style of play.Fans alike can expect a Raptors team that runs on the fast-break, creating open space and utilized it’s offensive potential.
They can expect a Raptors team that would surely be one of the most exciting to watch, and one that could potentially cement Colangelo’s reputation as an executive who plays his cards right when assembling newer talent.
- Another trade on the horizon? – Marcus Banks for Matt Carroll? The God’s are listening to your prayers.
- Dino Nation Blog: Raps Have 15 and Reason To Think Positive? – The last time Colangelo did a major make over like this the results were fantastic. If you want proof just go look at the banner that hangs in the ACC for evidence. That being said this team needs to do some things that Division Championship team did not. The first and foremost thing is get off to a quick start. That team that won the Atlantic actually never got off to the greatest start if you recall. This team given it’s schedule can not afford to fall behind like that out of the blocks. There was no Boston big 3 back then and the East as a whole was much weaker. If you are willing to concede that Boston, Orlando and Cleveland will be the top 3 teams in the East. That leaves just one home playoff spot to secure. The Atlanta Hawks held that spot last year. They also have made some adjustments and improvements. But, no team in the East has made more changes than the Toronto Raptors.
