Yesterday was just an incredible day. What started off as a little tweet in the late evening on a Wednesday night to a basketball player that many in most cities wouldn’t be able to name if shown a picture grew into something special.
I was floored when the first offer came in to add to my initial donation tweet, shocked at the second, humbled by the third and lost my ability to speak soon thereafter. Emails, comments on the blogs, DMs on twitter, IMs on my Blackberry, GTalk. All contained offers of help financially, offers of retweeting or simply what this all started being about: following Patrick O’Bryant.
As this day begins, Patrick has agreed to chip in $2500 to the cause, $1 for every follower he gets to the 2500 mark, which is our goal. That means that, as of 7:30am, we have raised $5810 to go to the Raptors Foundation……if @13POP13 gets to 2500 followers by the end of day October 31.
Fiftyeighthundredandten dollars.
I know this is the usual hokey acknowledgement, but I don’t want to list people to thank for spreading the word for fear of leaving someone out. I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t thank @sunsfan4life for being there after the first tweet and all day yesterday with words of encouragement, advice, and an amazing talent of setting twitter ablaze with the good word. Thank you. Also a thanks to Romy for adding the cause to the sidebar on his awesome site.
As mentioned more than a few times yesterday, it was nice to see twitter and the online Raptors fanbase being used for good. Both are dragged through the mud at times, but it shows that if a nerve is struck and the feeling is real it can result in something to be proud of. Now we need to get out there and spread the word to get POB some followers. Also, please use the hashtag #follow13POB13 and retweet the heck out of it.
Patrick is blown away. What started as a simple little quest has turned into something that is helping people that need it. The end result isn’t bad either, since after following Patrick on twitter you’ll get great photos of the mall, his opinion on milk being in bags and how his fiance is cool with the fact that he really just wants Megan Fox.
Seriously, though, thank you. Even if you can’t donate, as long as you follow POB to ensure the money gets donated, you’ve done your bit.
